The TV show Interior Design Masters has crowned its winner after eight weeks, with the winner and runner-up faced with the final challenge of giving a luxury villa in Cornwall a £6,000 makeover.
In the end, the victor was Lynsey Ford, who gave the property a new look designed for a ‘girl’s getaway’. Finalist Siobhan Murphy had focused on designing a new look for a family retreat.
Ms Ford, an architect, said afterwards: “What has just happened? I think I’m in shock. I’m totally and utterly blown away,” but she now takes the first prize of getting to redesign a hotel in the Lake District.
Her designs narrowly won from Ms Murphy, who may have lost out for being a little too bold and opulent in the design of the bedrooms for this to fit the ideal of a family retreat.
While viewers and social media users were divided on the judges’ choice, Londoners considering a makeover of their own might have picked up a number of ideas from the series.
Of course, the typical householder will not want to do the work of designing a makeover for their home themselves. That is why bringing in luxury interior designers in London is a wise move.
Part of the reason for this is obvious; a home in the capital is likely to be a very different proposition to a holiday retreat by the seaside in Cornwall. It is a place for everyday living, hospitality, and a place to come home to at the end of a hard working day (or at least will be after the pandemic).
Indeed, the way homes are redesigned may be impacted by increased home working even when the country is getting back to something approaching normal. Microsoft has just become the latest firm to publish a report predicting that hybrid working – where people split their work time between the home and office – is set to become the norm in many countries.
This may suggest future home design will have a balance of practicality as well as luxury – perhaps rather unlike some Cornish guest houses or Lake District hotels.
