Natural light is one of the most sought-after features in a home, and the benefits of daylight for mood and wellbeing are well known. A light airy home can seem more spacious, and help you feel more connected with the outdoors. Here are tips to help fill your home with natural light.
-
Decorate with light colours
House Beautiful recommends introducing shades of white to replace deep dark colours on the walls. This will help to reflect the natural light that enters the room, rather than absorbing it. They caution against using brilliant white paint as this can feel cold, but suggest an off-white tone with a reflective satin finish.
-
Make use of glazing
If you are fortunate enough to be planning a renovation or build project, then take the opportunity to install large windows and glass doors. On sunny south facing aspects, bi-folding glazed doors can be used to transform an entire wall to glass. This will flood the house with light, and provide superb outdoor views.
-
Choose glossy surfaces
In the bathroom and kitchen, go for large light coloured porcelain tiles which are shiny and reflect light. Choose consistent colour schemes in light blue or grey, if you don’t want white or cream. Making use of generously sized mirrors and metallic and glass accessories throughout your home will also help to increase light levels.
-
Opt for neutral flooring
Wooden, stone, or ceramic flooring can help to reflect light and make the room feel brighter. Carpets tend to absorb light, but if you want one, stick to lighter shades.
-
Deal with obstructive greenery
If your garden is overshadowed by tall trees and hedges, have them cut back to let more light into your home. However, before doing any severe pruning or felling, double check if trees are subject to a Protection Order, or if you live in a conservation area, as regulations will apply.
