Homeowners considering renting out one of their properties for staycations might want to redecorate in the style of cottagecore, as this interior design trend has been hailed as the most popular style among British holidaymakers.
A study by Crafted Beds looked at the rental value of self-catering properties on AirBnB and found those designed with cottagecore in mind were able to command the highest figures. This type of property earned an average of £104.95 per night, compared with country-style accommodation that charged £82 per night.
So what is cottagecore? This interior trend is inspired by the country, features environmentally-friendly fixtures and self-sufficient elements, and has a whimsical style.
According to House Beautiful: “Capturing a yearning for a life that is more rural and idyllic, it taps into a desire to be at one with nature, and to live in a world outside of the one currently inhabited.”
The reason properties designed in cottagecore can earn the greatest amount is because its aesthetic – which includes ditzy prints and muted tones – appeals to both city and country holidaymakers of all ages.
Its popularity soared during the pandemic, with Tumblr reporting a 153 per cent growth of cottagecore posts between March and August 2020. It is thought that lockdown encouraged people to take up traditional skills, such as baking, decorating, painting and flower-arranging, which helped to develop this interior trend.
It is not just cottagecore that is popular among those booking staycation holidays though, and properties with a coastal-inspired aesthetic command just slightly less at £101.44 per night.
