Colour plays a hugely important part in any successful interior design scheme and it’s important to factor this in at the very beginning of the planning stage, as it will have a big impact on the look and feel of your various living spaces, as well as influencing the rest of your purchasing decisions.
You might find it useful to do a bit of research into colour theory and how it relates to the world of interior design before you start spending any money on paint swatches and fabric samples.
The colours you choose to decorate your home with will help to set the mood, affecting how you feel when you’re in a space. For example, in the bedroom, you may want to go for a calmer colour scheme as opposed to something bright and bold, in order to help promote peaceful sleep.
The colour wheel can really come into its own if you’re doing your own design schemes, so make sure you know the basics of this, covering complementary colours (those directly opposite each other on the wheel), triads (which form a triangle) and analogous colours (groups right beside each other).
Also give consideration to tints and tones, which can be used alongside the main colours on the colour wheel to come up with a brilliant and inventive palette for any room in the house.
If it helps, think about colours as warm or cool to help you work out which parts of your home they would work best in. Larger rooms, for example, do well with warmer colours because they can help to create a cosier ambience.
