While the lockdown means we are all self-isolating at home, many of us have been turning to DIY and giving our homes a refresh. But with the usual outlets for interior design closed during the pandemic, you might be feeling a little limited as to what you can do.
For the moment, at least, we can tidy and de-clutter, and make plans for when we are free to head out and go shopping again. The Daily Mail has a list of out-dated and flawed interior design elements to avoid, but we’re going to look just at one room in particular – the living room.
Do away with fake flowers and plants.
It’s time to get rid of your fake flowers and plants. Real plants are beautiful and serve a purpose — they detoxify the air in your home. Plastic plants are tacky, and some might say that rather than bringing the energy of life into your home, they bring an intention to deceive.
Too many throw pillows can make your living room feel cluttered.
Decorative throw pillows can make a space look beautiful, but if there are too many, it’s only going to bring the design of the room down and make the space feel cluttered. Opt for just a few pillows for comfort, and try to choose ones with machine-washable covers so you can keep them looking great.
Swap out mass-produced art for more original designs.
One thing we can all do during the lockdown is to support artists. Replace the possibly tacky mass-produced artwork, especially any ‘inspirational quote’ art, and search online for independent artists who appreciate your patronage much more than a large business would.
Stacks of magazines and catalogues are just causing clutter.
We are all guilty of throwing those catalogues and magazines on the coffee table just in case we get the time to flip through them. But the reality is the pile builds up and we never really get around to looking at them. By removing them, you will instantly take a weight off of your living room.
