One of the biggest interior design movements of 2021 was cluttercore, with trendsetters filling their homes with knick-knacks, an eclectic mix of artwork, and lots of mismatched furniture. However, sleep experts advise keeping this look out of the bedroom, as it can have a big impact on a peaceful slumber.
Licensed clinical psychologist Nancy B Irwin told Living Etc that having lots of things in the bedroom can lead to sleep disorders.
“For optimal sleep, it helps to have your bedroom set up so that when you walk in at night, you feel like you are walking into a spa,” she stated.
To achieve this, she suggests using soft fabrics and fragrances in the bedroom that encourage relaxation.
In agreement, Sleep Health Content Specialist at Sleepopolis Vanessa Osorio said: “It over-stimulates the mind, distracts the senses, and makes relaxation difficult.”
Therefore, homeowners should choose minimalistic furniture for their bedroom, including platform beds and simple dressers, and only put up a few pieces of art.
She even recommends keeping only a handful of things on the nightstands, decluttering the space to aid a restful sleep.
When it comes to deciding on the colour of the walls, Healthline says blue could be the best choice, as it has a calming impact on the brain.
“All shades of blue can evoke a tranquil atmosphere, but stick with lighter shades on your bedroom walls for the best effect,” it suggested.
