When it’s cold and damp outside, we all want to come home to a cosy, warm home. We can wrap up in blankets and woolly jumpers, but you can transform your home into a comfortable sanctuary by adding some new lighting.
There are plenty of interior design trends that will add to the warmth of your home, but adding new lighting will certainly make it welcoming and cosy. So, where do you need extra lighting, and what bulbs should you use?
Light fittings aside, do not underestimate the power of the perfect lightbulb. You will see that bulbs have a temperature rating, which is measured in Kelvins. The higher number indicates a neutral white light that’s good for creating an energising, bright environment.
However, a light that will make you feel cosy will be one rated with a lower Kelvin that generates warmer, yellow or peach coloured light. 2700K on the Kelvin scale is ideal.
For a comparison on what these numbers relate to, bright daylight can be up to 6500K, while a fire is as low as 1900K, very cosy, but maybe a little too dim to see by.
Living room
To be able to sit and relax in the living room, you don’t want garish bright lights, it is best to create pockets of warmer light. Dimmable floor lamps are ideal for this, casting a warm puddle of light in a specific area. A stylish table lamp next to your comfiest armchair can create a cosy reading nook.
Bedroom
Bedside table lamps are ideal for creating a gentle, warm glow that will help you switch off as you settle into bed at night. Consider a separate reading lamp if you like to read before dozing off, but keep the lights that produce a relaxing glow.
Kitchen
Kitchens require brighter light when you’re working in them, but it’s nice to turn the glare down when you’re eating or just enjoying a glass of wine. A cluster of pendant lights above the dining table can set the scene for mealtimes, and by adding a dimmer, you can add a hint of romance for intimate occasions.
