Dining rooms can be tricky spaces to get right, as there needs to be a balance between function and form. We have a look at some tips to help you create a stunning dining room in your home.

Whether you have a separate dining room you want to decorate to create a glamorous space to host, or if you have a kitchen-diner set up, we’re here to help you make the important decisions on colour schemes, tables and dining chairs, layout and more.

What is the best layout for a dining room?

The best layout for your dining room will be determined by the size of your room and the ambience you wish to create.

For formal and elegant dining, keep it simple with a long rectangular table that sits in the centre and a comfortable amount of chairs so your guests all have ample space. A console table at one end of the room and a couple of tall lamps create a symmetrical feel for extra elegance.

For a smaller dining room, or to create something more cosy and intimate, go for a circular table in the centre of the room, and ground it with a circular rug. Alternatively, if you have space, take the table towards the corner of a room, and add a bar cart and a love seat for a more informal gathering space.

What do you need to include in a dining room?

It will only really work as a dining room if guests can sit for several hours in comfort, so choose your dining chairs carefully. Lighting is always an important aspect, and it is a good idea to be able to modify the lighting to suit the setting. Candles, whether tea lights or unscented taper candles, disperse a lovely warm glow.

Storage is also a good idea, such as a dresser, console table, or a credenza, so you can keep crockery and glassware to hand.
